Background Information

  • Deer Industry New Zealand is responsible for promoting and assisting the development of the New Zealand deer industry.

  • VelTrak; a fully electronic, web-based system that enables velvet to be tracked and traced from farm to market.

  • A unique project combining high resolution variable data printing and UHF RFID inlays encoding to produce a UHF identification tag and corresponding data file.

  • The tags supplied as singles required a 100% guaranteed supply and sequential order maintained at all times.

Continuation of Requirements in line with the 2021 Project

  • Use Case

    • Tracking Deer Velvet

  • Tag

    • RFID chip contained within laminated layers

  • Quantity

    • 500,000 quantity

  • Packaging

  • Tags loose and sequential with respect to Global Trade Identification Number

  • Sequentially numbered packs of 50 wrapped in translucent plastic sleeve

  • Box of 10,000 sequentially numbered tags, i.e. 10 x bags of 1,000 tags (or adjusted to fit boxes suitable for shipping)

2022 Improvements

Changes in Adhesive and other Components

  • Specifically sourced adhesive imported from Germany that addressed the demanding environmental adhesion requirements

  • Doubled the surface area of adhesive

  • Shortened the front laminate coverage to allow better adhesion

Research & Development

  • Professionally tested adhesive strength based on multiple applications to ensure new adhesive performed as required and met the updated specifications by Deer NZ

  • Both variables tested the surface tension

    • Adhesive type

    • Surface adhesion - laminated or non-laminated

  • Temperature testing in ambient heated and frozen conditions

  • Testing in moist conditions when subject to washing and cleaning processes

Internal Processes

  • Upgrades to our machinery and ongoing development of the operators skill set from 2021 to 2022 project allowed for:

    • Time & Labour Saving: Tags were produced in sequential order

    • Improved Stock Inventory Management: Fewer reprints as result of reduced/limited production loss - 0.68% Production Loss/Required Reprinting

    • Production Efficiency:  Produced on RM5 that had a huge impact on output speed and quality

    • Advanced Systems and Procedures: Retained order of tags (important factor resulting in faster scanning and processing, a requirement of DINZ

Outcomes and Efficiencies

  • Processing improvement from 2021 project to 2022 project

    • 13% reduction in processing time

  • An efficient team with improved systems and processes

  • Quicker turnaround of total output compared to 2021

  • Increased R & D time frame combined with lessons learnt from 2021 allowed for greater enhancements to key components and specifications resulting in a high performing product that was able to withstand rigorous on and off farm handling

Presentation of Findings/Case Evaluation

  • Total customised solution was achieved through quality control of the production and processing phases.

  • Unique packaging and labeling was implemented to complement the customers existing software system and data file management to achieve a high level of accuracy to support their specifications.

  • In the event of production losses, the lost tags were replaced with identically numbered tags (Barcode and Human Readable Number) to maintain fully sequential ranges in each pack as outlined above.
